The Soul of Sondagskloof

Where we grow & who we are.

In 2006, we pioneered and registered the Sondagskloof Wine Ward — a place tucked between the Atlantic breeze and the inland stillness. 65km from Cape Agulhas, in the far-flung corner of the Overberg, our vineyards sit surrounded by wild fynbos, roaming breezes, and terrain that politely refuses to be tamed. Of the 350 hectares that make up the farm, only 65 are under vine. That choice — to plant less and listen more — is part of what defines our wines.

A Unique Site-Specific & Viticultural Philosophy

Title

Sondagskloof sits in the Walker Bay district, but it has a rhythm all its own. Cool mornings. Coastal wind. Summer rain. Clay-rich soils. These aren’t just nice-to-haves — they’re the reason the wines taste the way they do. The growing season is longer out here, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and develop complex flavours while maintaining balance and elegance.

We embrace a conservation-first approach, with less than 20% of our land under vine. The other 80%? We leave it alone. Because we understand the difference between farming and forcing. Our commitment to low-yield farming prioritizes quality over quantity, producing refined, European-styled wines that reflect the cool climate and clay-rich soils of Sondagskloof.

We don't farm sustainably because it's trendy—we do it because it works. Respect the land, and it gives you better grapes. Simple as that.

A Climate That Shapes The Wine

Title

Sondagskloof's distinct vineyard sites here are shaped by cool temperatures, salty Atlantic air, summer rainfall, and rugged, clay-rich soils. With the cold Benguela Current sweeping in off the coast, the growing season stretches out longer than most. That extra time means grapes ripen slowly, develop real flavour, and hold onto the kind of acidity you don’t have to force.

Moderate daytime temperatures stop sugar levels from climbing too quickly, while cool nights sharpen acidity and build depth. Constant ocean breezes reduce heat stress and enhance fruit purity, keeping things clean and balanced without needing too much intervention.

Summer rain and clay soils do the rest, holding just enough moisture to keep the vines healthy with minimal irrigation, reinforcing sustainable viticulture. Subtle shifts in elevation and terrain create microclimates that layer nuance into the wines, producing site-specific wines that showcase purity, structure, and a true expression of place.

Sondagskloof wines are distinguished by their crisp aromatics, fresh acidity, and elegant structure - wines that taste like this place and nowhere else.
